Week of March 9, 2020

Team Handball Update- Thank you to all of the teams who came out yesterday in the first day of the 7th and 8th grade handball tournament.  the second, and final day of the tournament will start right after school with game 13 Children of God vs The Dinosaurs.  All other teams, be sure to check the brackets in the the Dining Commons and on google classroom to see when your game is.  Remember, its double elimination, meaning you have to lose 2 games before being out of the tournament.  6th grade team handball rosters are due tomorrow, Friday, March 13th.  If you plan to compete be sure to have the rosters in to Mr. Flynn before 2 P.M. on Friday.  The tournament will start next week on Tuesday, March 17th.

Attention Best Buddies Team Bubba Bears-
Event today!!! Meet in the Dining Commons at 2:30.  Rides pick up at 4:00.

8th grade screening
will be held today.  It is important to report to Room 1005 at your scheduled time.  Don't ghost!! Homeroom teachers, please distribute passes to your students who have screenings today.

Handball
-The 7th and 8th grade tournament brackets are out.  Be sure to check the handball google classroom to see who your team is playing.  The first game between the Kool Aide Jammas and Toor Maas will take place at 2:40 P.M. tomorrow, Wednesday after school.

 6th Grade Team Handball rosters are due Friday, March 13th!!! Team Handball -
7th and 8th grade Team Handball rosters are due this Friday, March 6th.  Currently Wizzing Wizards will win the tournament uncontested.  The tournament will take place next week on March 11th and 12th.  Blank rosters can be found in the Dining Commons as well as on the Team Handball google classroom. Also, Mr. Flynn is looking for student managers to help him during the handball tournament.  Student managers would help run the clock, keep track of the score, and update the tournament bracket.  If interested, please see Mr. Flynn before Tuesday, March 10th.

must see Ms. Chambers today, March 2nd ASAP for Museum of Science overnight information. See Ms. Chambers immediately after homebase today, March 4th if you plan on going to the Museum of Science Overnight.

Free Fun Friday and OPEN gym
is today February 28th at 2:30 until 4:30!!! Come join the fun.

The Gates 7/8 Band did an excellent job performing at their February recital last night!!! Highlights included Pompeii featuring Billy Nicolo performing on a homemade drum set made of recyclables and trash.  Amelia Merritt received huge applause for an outstanding rendition of Do-Re-Mi.  Wyllys Ames, Kaelyn DeMello and Daniel Lengen performed a fantastic trio.  Matt Carolan did a masterful job playing saxophone on Take Five. Matt Short accompanied him on piano and Patrick Hale played drum set.Matt Short, Patrick Hale, Riley Nidisitko, Billy Nicolo and Callie Loeffel concluded the performance with Here Comes the Sun.  Everyone did a great job last night.

Attention Best Buddies-
Monday, March 2nd is Best Buddies Lunch during lunch block.  Remember to join your buddies at the reserved tables.

We will extend homeroom for five minutes on Tuesday to review  Black History Slides. Teachers please do not dismiss students until you have finished today's slides.  The bell will ring.

There is a meeting for all Peer leaders today(Tuesday) after school in Room 1029.  We will be done by the time the buses leave.

The Gates Wrestling Team finished it's season over vacation by competing in the South Coast Invitational Tournament against some extremely tough competition from all over New England.  The team finished 8th out of 22 teams.  The following wrestlers earned individual recognition:

Third place
was earned by: AJ Reimels, Matt Dunn, and Jack Tarsala
Second place was earned by: Max Nabstedt, Ryan Murray, and Jack Tarsala
First place was earned by Paul Cheverie and Sara McLaughlin, who both went undefeated through the whole tournament.
Colin Dubois, Gil Nabstedt, Jacob Kenneway, Ned Finkle and Ryan Johnson-Rees wrestled tough as well.
Congratulations to the Gates Wrestling Team on a strong finish to your season and see you all on the mat next year.

Mrs. Rotty's 6th grade Art Classes will meet with Mrs. Riley in Room 1016 today, February 24th.

The Gates Team handball tournament is back!!!! 
The tournament will be on March 10th and 11th for 7th and 8th grade and March 17th and 18th for 6th grade.  Teams can have 6-10 students.  Teams must be made up of both boys and girls.  Your team rosters must be turned into Mr. Flynn by March 6th.

February 13th is the LAST day you can register a team for the 3v3 Basketball League.  Check the class code and google classroom or see Mr. Schattgen for more information.  The league starts Monday after vacation.

Good Morning!!! February is Black History Month.  In order to celebrate the accomplishments of historical and contemporary African Americans, we will use time in homebase each Tuesday this month to learn about six famous figures who have impacted our world.  We will extend homeroom for five minutes to review today's Black History Slides. Teachers please do not dismiss students until you have finished today's slides.

The Gates Wrestling Team put on a strong showing at the Big East Tournament in Boston on Sunday.
5th place was earned by Ryan Murray
3rd place was earned by David Murphy, Grayson Loeffel, and Paul Cheverie
2nd place was earned by Will Hartwell, Max Allen, Jackson Davenport, Cruz Tompkins, and AJ Reimels
1st place was earned by Jacob Kenneway, Max Nabstedt, Owen Quinn, and Wyllys Ames
Sara McLaughlin wrestled in 2 tournaments on Sunday and earned 2nd place at the Big East and 1st place at the New England Girls Championship.
Charlie Murphy, Charlie Ward, Colin Dubois, Gil Nabstedt, Jack Tarsala, Lydon O'Brien, Jack Jacobus, Noah Don, and Ryan Kosman all wrestled tough as well.
Congratulations to the Gates Wrestling Team and good luck as you continue your season.

Under the coaching and support of Scituate teachers Ms. Kent, Mrs. Gaziano and Mrs. Grindle, Gates Middle School hosted a mathleague.org math meet on January 8th. Thirty-two students from Scituate and Cohasset competed in four rounds of math competition in January.  The results are in and the awards , as designated and scored by the sponsoring mathleague.org were given to the folllowing Scituate students:
Individual Overall Awards to 1st place Max Allen and 2nd place to Wesley Robertson
In the team round the first place team was Conor Sullivan,Emmy Easterly, Natalie D'Alotto and Declan Fitzgibbons
Also in the team round, the 3rd place team was Louisa Kinsley, Clement Dumet, Myles McCusker and Jane Ryan
Honorable Mention and Participation Awards were earned by: Corbin Ward, Emmett Cemeron, Edward Smith, Cassady Bleakney, Charlotte Hoover, Luke Tieney
Eight of our team members also qualified for the National competition in April.  Congratulations to all of our Gates mathletes!!!!


Week of February 3, 2020

6th Grade Chorus is cancelled today February 6th.  All students must report to enrichment.

The first SPRING ART CLUB  meet up will be today, February 6th after school in Room 1038.  Please have your ride ready at 3:30 for pick up.

There will be an Environmental Club meeting on Thursday so you can sign up for the Museum of Science Overnight.

Free Fun Friday
starts this Friday, February 7th and continues until the end of March.  It begins in the Dining Commons at 2:30 and ends at 4:30.  There will be music, open gym, ping pong, games, and snacks!!! All students in grade 6-8 are welcome to join the FUN!!!

The Gates Wrestling Team took on it's toughest challenge yet this weekend- wrestling in Massachusetts Eastern Sectional Tournament in Methuen.
Sara McLaughlin, Paul Cheverie, David Murphy, and Ryan Murray all picked up wins. 
Noah Don, Jack Tarsala and Max Allen wrestled tough and made us proud.
The big congratulations of the day go to 6th grader Liam Theriault who placed 8th and will be moving on to the State Tournament.
A HUGE shout out also goes to 8th grader David Murphy.  David stepped up on Saturday and became the first Gates wrestler in the team's 14 - year history to compete for Scituate High School as a JV wrestler and took home his first High School win by pinning his opponent. Congratulations to the Gates Wrestling Team and good luck as you continue your season.

The Teacher's Choice Award goes to the Black Team.  Mrs. Rotty's D Block class: Crowd Pleaser Award goes to the Yellow Team. The Teacher's Choice Award goes to the Green Team. Mrs. Mihaley's C Block class: People's Choice Award goes to the Green Team. The Teacher's Choice also goes to the Green Team. Runner up is the Purple Team. All Gates students who are interested in joining the SPRING session of Art Club, the NEW sign - ups for the club will be outside Ms. Glover's room 1038 this week: Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday.  Ask a friend to join you!! Art Club is held after school every Thursday from 2:40-3:30 P.M.  It is a time to hang out with friends and create your own kind of art. This is a limit of 25 students so be the first to sign up!! Former Fall session members welcomed too!  The final member list for the SPRING session will be posted Friday, January 31st.  Our first club meet up will be after school Thursday, February 6th.

Addams Family Audition
are starting today(January 6th) right after school.  Please make sure all forms are complete before you arrive.  We will be meeting in the cafeteria.

Please help and support our friend Abby.  Abby has always been a creative, energetic, funny and caring person.  She has been in the hospital for the past several months.  Abby has an illness called PANS disease.  This week there will be a fundraiser for her.  Dog tags will be sold, you can use the dog tags for necklaces, bracelets or key chains.  These tags will be sold for $5.00 each. Remember the dates that the dog tags are being sold is from January 6 to January 10.  On January 10th we will have a day of wearing purple which is Abby's favorite color.

Congratulations to the winners of the Fall Box Top Contest!!!Mr. McCarthy's Homeroom came in first place earning $9.60!! Ms. LeBlanc's Homeroom came in second place earning $8.70!! Mr. McCarthy and Ms. LeBlanc's Homerooms will enjoy a game of Bingo before the winter break.  Congratulations to all!!  The winter competition begins on January 16th - bring your box tops to the main office!!

Wednesday, November 27th will be the 3rd Annual Gates Turkey Trot to support the Scituate Food Pantry as part of an exciting Gates Spirit Day.  Please bring in canned goods or cash donations.  The team with the most canned goods and cash donations will receive bonus points toward their team spirit points.  All canned goods and donations should be given to your homebase teacher.

Drama Tech begins today(Nov. 25th) for set design crew and props crew.  We will meet in the Black box at 2:45 P.M. Today is the last day for drama permission slips and forms.  Please give to Ms. Warwick by the end of the day.

Today(Nov. 20th) is the 8th grade trip to tour South Shore Votech.  If you plan to go and have a signed permission form, please report to the Dining Commons as soon as the bell rings at the end of homebase.  Mrs. Newton will be in the Dining Commons to take attendance.  The trip will return around 10:30.

On November 19, 2019 Mrs. Mihaley's 6th grade Art Classes will meet with Mrs. Mahoney.  It is important that you bring a chromebook with you.

Congratulations to the 7th grade Sci-Coh Football team for winning the Super Bowl yesterday. Also, congratulations to all the participants.

Tech Crew interviews are today(Nov. 18th) for Gates Drama Club.

Congratulations to Reagan Wood and Alex Pachenko who are the winners of this year's yearbook cover design contest.  They will both receive a yearbook!!!

Wednesday, November 20th is the South Shore Votech Student Tour , all are welcome to attend. A bus will pick students up at Gates at approximately 8:00 and return students to Gates at approximately 10:30 A.M. You MUST have a parent sign a permission slip in order to attend this tour.  Please see Mrs. Riley for these permission forms.

A reminder to all wrestlers: Practices are on Mondays and Thursdays from 2:45-4:45 in the Gates gym starting Monday, November 18th. Emergency information forms MUST be turned in before you can practice. Please let Mr. Robinson know if you have any questions or concerns.

Wednesday, November 27th will be the 3rd Annual Gates Turkey Trot to Support the Scituate Food Pantry as part of an exciting Gates Spirit Day.   Please start bringing in canned goods or cash donations starting Monday, November 18th.  The team with the most canned goods and cash donations will receive bonus points toward their team spirit points.  All canned goods and donations should be given to your homebase teacher.

Mr. Schattgen's 6th grade D block PE class will meet with Mrs. Mahoney today(Nov. 14th).  It is important that you bring your chromebook with you.

A reminder to all wrestlers: Practices are on Mondays and Thursdays from 2:45-4:45 in the Gates gym starting next Monday, November 18th. Emergency information forms MUST be turned in before you can practice. Please let Mr. Robinson know if you have any questions or concerns.

There will be a very important Environmental Club meeting today(Nov. 14th)!

Next Wednesday, November 20th is the South Shore Votech Student Tour , all are welcome to attend. A bus will pick students up at Gates at approximately 8:00 and return students to Gates at approximately 10:30 A.M. You MUST have a parent sign a permission slip in order to attend this tour.  Please see Mrs. Riley for these permission forms.

Week of October 28, 2019


The Gates Cross Country team completed their season on Wednesday)Oct. 30th) at the South Shore Middle School League Championships. Gates students participated in several races. 

The boys 7th and 8th grade team competed well with Wesley Hine, Quinn Corkins, Matt Carolan, Denham Lunt and Jonah Riedel competed against over 160 runners from 19 schools.

The boys Championship team also competed well with Connor Burbine, Liam Holden, Emmett Cameron, Jack Beaudin, Max Allen and Clement Dumet placing 16th out of 19 schools with over 100 runners in their race.


The girls 6th grade team ran a strong race against 19 schools with over 100 runners.  Hasley Wade earned 19th place, Molly Gould earned 20th place, Claire Flemming earned 34th place and Sara McLaughlin and Tabby Hurley also competed well.The girls 7th and 8th grade team ran a strong race against over 150 runners from 19 schools.  Ingrid McLaughlin earned 27th place, Liah Brennan earned 49th place and Lyla Devine earned 53rd place.  Other runners in the race included Katerina Goyette, Eva Rosado-Nixon, Caroline Shinney, Alexa Barthel, Kelsey Modder, Hannah Smith, Claire Murray, Fiona Kendall, Cecilia Gagnon, Julie Greene and Piper Mariano.The girls championship team ran an awesome race finishing in a strong 4th place out of 19 teams with over 100 runners. Congratulations to Lucy Wilson who earned 11th place, Jasmine Lanata who earned 21st place, Katelyn Mankewich who earned 31st place, Grace Cingel who earned 50th place and Jane Ryan, Autumn Leverine and Claire Timmons.

Grade 6 Band students
Lessons for Group 3 flute are at 12:05,lessons for Group 4 flute are at 12:32. lessons for Group 5 sax are at 1:01.  Instrumental lessons are required for participation in band.  If you have a test during this time, you must check in with Mrs. Dasilva.

Ms. Niece's classes will meet in Room 1032 today(October 25th).

Congratulations to the Gates 7/8 Band for an outstanding concert last night(October 24th)!!! Highlights included Emma Braun, Matthew Carolan, Nora Lindblom and Max Allen playing beautiful solos.  Patrick Hale conducted the band for the song "Ashokan Farewell."  Everyone did a fantastic job!!

All Environmental Club Members- There will be a meeting today(October 24th) in Room 2034.

October 22, 2019 all 6th graders who have Mr. Schattgen will be meeting with Mrs. Mahoney. Please bring your chromebook. 

On Thursday of this week, we will have Tatum Strong Day.  This will be a day to show your support for Tatum who was diagnosed with aHUS in late September.  Tatum is in the hospital and is getting stronger with each day.  On Tatum Strong Day, you can show your support by wearing orange clothing and/or wearing a Tatum is the new strong bracelet which will be sold during lunches this week.  Let's get 100 percent of Gates to support Tatum on Thursday!!!

Gates Jazz Band audition is today (Oct. 21st)!  Please sign up for an audition time on the Gates Band Room bulletin board.  We are especially looking for pianists, guitarists, and bass guitarists.

Today(Oct. 18th) is the last day to sign up for Gates Drama Tech and the Gates Drama movie field trip.  Make sure to get your forms in to Ms. Warwick.

The Scholastic Book Fair will be held through Friday.  There is a great selection of books and fun items to choose from.

All students interested in auditioning or doing Tech for The Addams Family, there will be a field trip October 29th after school to see a private showing of the movie in Scituate Harbor.  See Ms. Warwick or Ms. Burke for a permission slip.

Mrs. Mahoney will NOT be having class today(October 7th) with her 6th graders. Students should plan on attending Mr. Flynn's PE class today.

School Dance
Attention Students!  Our Welcome Back Dance is scheduled for Friday, October 4th from 7:00 - 9:00 P.M. in the Dining Commons.  The theme is "California Dreamin" - come dressed as a surfer, flower child, your favorite movie star, or whatever makes you feel chill!  There will be activities and raffles for students who attend.  The cost is $5.00 - we look forward to seeing everyone there!!!
