Week of May 16, 2022

Ms. Glover's  and Ms. Mihaley's 7th and 8th Grade Term 1 and Term 2 Art Students
Please come back to  pick up your remaining artwork in Ms. Glover's room before homebase, during H Block, or at the end of the day by Tuesday, May 24th.  All artwork that is not picked up by the end of the day on Tuesday, May 24th will go to ART HEAVEN.

Strength and Conditioning Club  is cancelled Wednesday, May 18th. 
The rescheduled is for Friday, May 20th after school from 2:30-3:30.  Mr. Robinson looks forward to seeing you then.
Team Handball
6th grade team handball rosters are due this Thursday, May 19th.
Blank rosters can be found in the Dining Commons by the microphone as well as the team handball google classroom. If you have already turned in a roster, be sure that everyone on your team is still able to play on Monday, May 23rd from 2:45-4:30.  Tournament brackets will be posted on the handball google classroom on Friday(May 20th). Good Luck to all teams.

Neon Glow Dance
The Neon Glow Dance will take place this Friday(5/20) form 7:00 -9:00 P.M. in the Dining Commons.  All students are invited and are encouraged to wear white to participate in a neon-painting event.  Admission is $5.00 and students must arrive by 7:30 to be admitted.  Students needing to leave the dance early must have a parent or caregiver come into the building to sign them out.  We hope to see you there!!!

Gates Diversity and Inclusion Club, TIDES and LIT

Team handball Update
Thank you to all of the teams and spectators who came out yesterday to compete in and watch the 7th and 8th grade handball tournament.  It was an afternoon full of intense competition.  But at the end of the day, we could only have one champion...Congratulations to Team SQCMCCCF for winning and going on undefeated in the tournament. Etching their names into Gates History.  Never before has a team won with a captain who wore flip flops and ate clementine while he played. 6th grade team handball rosters are due this Thursday, May 19th.  Give you complete mixed gendered rosters to Mr. Flynn or his mailbox in the main office by 2P.M.  on Thursday, May 19th.

Any 6th or 7th grade student  who missed Math MCAS, please report to Room 2016 after homeroom.

Team Handball
7th and 8th grade Team Handball will take place after school today on the basketball courts.  All competitors should be on the courts by 2:45P.M. ready to play.  First game will be between 07 vs Dingletons and SQCMBCGACF vs Big Baller Club.  Bracket and tournament information can be found on the handball google classroom.  6th Grade team handball rosters are due Thursday, May 19th.  Teams must be made up of mixed genders.  Be sure to have at least one person on your team join the Handball Google classroom for updates and other tournament information.  Blank rosters can be found in the Dining Commons by the microphone as well as the team handball google classroom.

Environmental Club

Jr. SEMBSBA
At this past weekend's Jr SEMBSBA Music Festival, our very own Mr. Lessard was presented with the Rachel Hallenbeck SEMSBA Teacher of the Year Award. This award honors directors  who exemplify high standards of music education as well as volunteering, serving on the board and conducts festivals.  We are incredibly proud of Mr. Lessard and we are grateful to have such a talented and committed educator working among us at Gates.

JV Softball
The JV Softball team won its 5th straight 25-0 over Quincy  upping their record to 8-1
behind the shutout pitching of Stella Beaudry. Speed merchant Jackie McDonald's presence on the bases, Millie Murphy's solid work behind the plate, and Riley Guterl's 5th inning homerun sparked the win.

Freshman Football
Attention 8th grader football players- For anyone interested in playing freshman football this fall, there will be an information meeting on Monday, May 9th at 2:45 p.m. in Room 1016.  Mr. Fitzgerald and Coach Sweeney will be conducting the meeting.  There will be a brief introduction to the program and coaches will provide information about spring and summer workouts.  Please have your parent's email and cell phone information ready so Coach Sweeney can collect contact information.  The coaching staff is eager to meet the eighth graders and get to work this summer and beyond!!!

Environmental Club

Gates Math  Homework Club
Just a reminder that the Gates Math Homework Club will meet today(5/4) after school until 3:45.  All students that signed up should plan on meeting in Room 20330 at dismissal.

Student Council
Gates Student Council is hosting a Spring Craft Fair after school on Friday, June 3rd in the Dining Commons.  We  are looking for crafty students to sell their handmade crafts and art.  Please email danielbeaudin@student.scit.org or check the posters around school for more information.  This is a great opportunity to make some extra cash for the Spring!!

Handball Tournament

he Gates Team Handball Tournament will be on May 16th and 17th for 7th and 8th grader and May 23rd for 6th grade.  Teams can have 6-10 students. Team must be mixed gendered.  7th and 8th grade rosters must be turned in by May 11th.  See Mr. Flynn for a sign up sheet.

Come to LIT Lunch on Tuesday, May 3rd with Jamele Adams, our District's Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion!  There is a lot going on in the world and at Gates. Gates Middle School Art Show
Attention and congrats to the Gates Students who have had their artwork chosen by a jury of local professional artists.  Your artwork will be exhibited at the Gates Middle School Art Show.  Please see the MASTER LIST  of students chosen posted  in the Gates Main Office.  You will be also receiving an email invite to the show from your art teacher.  The Gates Juried Student Art show will be held at the Scituate Maritime Center on Friday, April 29th and Saturday, April 30th.  ALL Gates Students are invited to visit the show and support their peers.

Impro Troupe
Improv begins again on Tuesday from 2:30-3:30 in the Black box.

Gates Field Hockey Club
Field hockey starts today(4/25)!!! We will meet on turf 3( the softball field) at 2:45.  We will play until 3:30.

Best Buddies Team 2 has been cancelled and will be rescheduled in May.

Grade 8 Art
Mrs. Rotty's Art classes. Please bring a jacket to class but leave your phones in your lockers when you come to class.  We will go  as a group to get your phones before starting our Photography Unit.

Trevor Project
Did you know that, according to the Trevor Project, 52% of LGBTQ youth who were enrolled in middle or high school reported being bullied, either in person or electronically in the past year? As you learned in advisory, the Day of Silence is today(4/8).  It is the annual day to spread awareness about the effects of the bullying and harassment of LGBTQ+ students. Some students may choose to take a vow of silence to symbolize the silencing of LGBTQ+ community.  If you'd like to participate, grab a sticker in homeroom to show your support, and/or take a voluntary vow of silence for some  or all of the day, and/or buy a pencil or sticker at lunch- Proceeds go to the Trevor Project.  In the true spirit of today, please be respectful of everyone.

Kindness Week
Thank you to everyone who participated in Kindness week last week! We raised over $200.00 during our fundraiser! ALL proceeds will go directly to the Ukraine Crisis Relief Fund to help children and families affected by the war.  Thank you for your participation and let's continue to make Gates a kinder place!

Wrestling
Congratulations to 8th grader and Gates Wrestler Sara McLaughlin for placing 7th in  a bracket of 46 high school girls from all over the United States and earning ALL-AMERICAN Honors this past weekend at the High School Nationals tournament, one of the top rated wrestling tournaments n the country!

Gates Drama
Attention all students! The Gates Drama Club will be performing The Addams Family Musical this Friday night at 7PM and this Saturday at 2PM and 7PM. Tickets will be sold at lunch time this Thursday and Friday. Student tickets are $10. Adults are $12 and seniors are $10. Tickets can also be purchased online or at the door. Come see a great show and support your friends in our cast and crew!

Lunch
Beginning today, the Dining Commons will revert back to the use of tables instead of individual desks.  We are very excited to be able to safely make this shift for students.  To help make this a smooth transition, please be sure to meet the following expectations:
       Students must walk to lunch
       Students should enter the Dining Commons and select a seat of their choice for the lunch period
       Students can remain at the same table each day or can sit at a different table each day.  If sitting on the stairs, students must sit in the front three rows.
       Once seated, students must stay in their seats for the entire lunch period
       Tables and chairs must be clean before students leave the Dining Commons
       Students must push their chair in

TIDES, Gates Diversity and Inclusion Group
Today(3/8) after school Gates Diversity and Inclusion group, TIDES Club will  be combining its efforts with Gates LIT Team.  The two groups focus on diversity and inclusion issues at school and in our greater community.  If these issues interest you, please stop by to have your voice heard.  The Club will be meeting in Room 1029 after school.  Newcomers are always welcome, and you can bring a friend along with you too.

Gates Wrestling Team
The Gates Middle School Wrestling Team wrapped up its season over the vacation.  Congratulations to everyone who competed at the Middle School All-State Tournament last weekend: Ryan Belmarsh, Connor McLaughlin(who placed 3rd), Cullen Fessenden, Mark McGourty(who placed 5th), Julius Tompkins, Manny Lopes, Jake Scanzillo, Roan Hennigan, Grady Belmarsh, Grayson Loeffel, Colin DuBois, Grady Fessenden, Liam Theriault, AJ Reimels, Brady Standridge, Finn O'Connor.  A special shout out goes to 8th grader Sara McLaughlin.  Sara went undefeated, never allowed a single point scored against her, and pinned all of her opponents to earn First Place in BOTH the Girls All-State High School Tournament and the Girls K-12 New England Middle and High School Tournaments.  Congratulations to ALL Gates Wrestlers on an outstanding season and we look forward to seeing you all on the mat next year.

The Gates Wrestling Team hosted a small tournament last night (2/9)of over 80 wrestlers at Scituate High School.  The following wrestlers made our school proud by either winning or just fighting hard and giving 100% on the mat: Jake Scanzillo, TJ Haughton, Connor McLaughlin, Roan Hennigan, Bodie Ahearn, Nolan Maguire, Grady Belmarsh, Grayson Loeffel, Cullen Fessenden, Colin Dubois, Max Davenport, Manny Lopes, Mark McGourty, Liam Theriault, Grady Fessenden, Jacoby Gilligan, Owen Quinn, AJ Reimels, Julius Tompkins, Will Larson, Brady Standridge, Finn O'Connor, and Jack Jacobus

We'd like to recognize the OUTSTANDING efforts of the following wrestlers who competed last weekend against Hingham and Cohasset: 8th grader Brady Standridge and 6rh grader Julius Tompkins continues to impress with their toughness on the mat.  8th grader Sara McLaughlin wrapped up her first regular season as a varsity wrestler for Scituate High School with an amazing 19-4 record against opponents who were almost exclusively high school boys.  Congratulations to the Gates Wrestling Team and good luck as you continue your season.

Shoutout to 8th Grade Gates wrestler Sara McLaughlin.  She continued to impress at the High School level this weekend, going 2-1 and earning 2nd place at the Cohasset tourPnament.  Sara's efforts were a significant contribution to SHS winning the tournament.

Pajama Day
The Environmental Club would like to remind everyone that Wednesday is an All School Pajama Day.  This is in celebration of help with our #Team Seas fundraiser to remove 727 pounds of plastic from the ocean.

Congratulations to the Gates Wrestlers who competed last night for Scituate High School wrestling.  Finn O' Connor battled hard in a tough match to the third period.  Colin DuBois and Sara McLaughlin both won by pin.  Good luck to all our wrestlers as they continue their season.

Environmental Club
The Gates Environmental Club is happy to inform you that next Wednesday, January 26th, will be a school wide PJ day.  As a school, we raised $727.00 for TeamSeas and would like to reward you for your efforts.  However, 7th grade raised the most money with over $300.00. Because of that, 7th graders will be watching an ocean themed movie from start to finish over the course of several days at lunch, starting on Monday, January 24th.  The movie will only be played on days where there is no band and chorus.  Again, the movie is only for the 7th grade. But PJ day will be enjoyed by the whole school.  Thank you for raising all this money for TeamSeas.

Students auditioning for the Addams Family Musical -There will be a AUDITION MUSIC WORKSHOP Wednesday, January 5th from 2:30-3:30 in the Black Box. Environmental Club
The Environmental Club fundraiser to remove trash form oceans has officially ended and as a school we raised $720.00. Later this week, the award will be announced.  In first place is 7th grade with $300.00.  Second place went to 6th grade with $257.00. Third place was 8th grade with $177.00.  Also,  a reminder to all Environmental Club members that we will be meeting after school this Wednesday(1/5) from 2:30-3:30P.M.

Congratulations to the 7/8 Bands and Choirs for performing a great Winter  Concert last night(12/9)!  Congratulations to Michaela Whittaker for singing a great solo. Matilda Grant conducted the band and did an excellent job! Congratulations to all of the students for their hard work.  they sounded great!!

Environmental Club

The Environmental Club is trying to help out an organization called Team Seas.  They raise money that helps remove plastic from the ocean and rivers.  We are asking you to help out! For every dollar you give, One pound of plastic trash will be removed from the ocean. We are trying to raise $1,000.00 for each grade starting this Tuesday, November 30 through December 22.  If everyone chips in, our goal will be reached in a jiffy.  At lunch, you can find your grade buckets with the help of your Environmental Club and donate.  There is no limit!! Every penny is appreciated!  This is optional.  But it would help our Earth.  Go Team Seas.

Wrestling

Mr. Beattie was selected by a national organization, TCS, as one of only 50 teachers in the entire country to run in the New York City Marathon.  Mr. Beattie will represent Gates Middle School and will run the 26.2 miles this weekend in New York City.  If you see him today(11/5) wish him good luck and congratulations!!

Week of September 27, 2021

Art Club
Reminder to all members of the Art Club.  We will have our first meet-up today(9/30) in Room 1038, Ms. Glover's room, right after school.  Please have your ride ready for pick up at 3:30.

Gates Cross Country
Their first meet of the season was yesterday.  The girls beat Weymouth by a score of 22-35(low score wins).  Top finishers were Alice Rowland, Grace Kroeger, Narissa Lipchitz, Molly Gould and Addy DuBois.  The boys lost in a close score of 25-31.  Top finishers were Bobby Naylor, Beckett Dowling, Caiden Hawkins, Micah Mulder, and Zeke Neskirk.  Gates students can still sign up.  See Mr. English with any questions.

TIDES
Today(September 28th) TIDES Club will meet after school in Room 1029.  Please have your ride ready at 3:30.  All are welcome to come and check out the diversity and equity club.
Gates Drama
Gates Drama Improv troupe will begin meetings on Tuesday, October 12th from 2:30-3:30 in the Black Box!! Come by and practice your improv acting skills.  See Ms. Warwick with questions and join the Improv google classroom code: gch3v4r.

Environmental Club
The first Environmental Club meeting of the yea will be Wednesday, September 29th from 2:35-3:30 in Room 2034.  Come join us and see how we work with Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary and more!!!
TIDES
TIDES Club will be meeting for the first time tomorrow(Tuesday) after school in room 1029.  TIDES Club is Gates diversity and equity club focusing on inclusion of all at our school.  If you have any questions, please reach out to Mrs. Newton in the Counseling Office. Week of September 20, 2021

Next week, on Tuesday, September 28th, Gates will be holding its first TIDES Club. TIDES Club is  Gates' Diversity and Equity club, focusing on inclusion in our school community.  The club will be held on  Tuesdays after school from 2:30-3:30.  If you have any questions, please see Mrs. Newton in the Counseling Suite.  Also, join the TIDES google classroom with code srurgk2.

Just a reminder, students are not allowed to switch buses.  You must go home on your assigned bus.

Art Club
Attention students who enjoy making art and hanging out with friends!! Ms. Glover holds Art Club on Thursday  after school from 2:21- 3:30p.m.  If you are interested in creating and making any type of art, sign up for Art Club today in Room 1038. Space is limited, members will be chosen by lottery, if need be, Ms. Glover will post the final member list this THURSDAY.  If you can't make the Fall Session, there will be a  Spring Session sigh up in February!!

Announcements Week of September 13, 2021

This is a reminder for all students and staff that masks must be worn at all times while inside of Gates Middle School.  Masks must completely cover your nose and mouth.  Students are permitted to remove their masks only while seated at lunch and while outside on mask breaks.  Thanks for doing your part to keep everyone in our community healthy and safe!!

Attention Students:
Are you still having trouble opening your locker? Do you need extra practice and support? If so, join us on Friday after school in the Dining Commons for extra practice.  All are welcome to attend.  See Mr. Beattie with questions.

Cross Country Team
Join Gates Cross Country Team for Fitness, Friendship, and Fun.
Practice will be held on Mondays beginning on September 20th.  Practices will be held on both Monday and Wednesday with meets on Wednesdays.  Google classroom code is kp5yihp and is posted in all Team areas and near copiers.  See Mr. English with any questions.
